Investigators for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are looking into the cause of a crash that killed a woman on a highway in Newark on Thursday evening.
Police say, at approximately 4:55 p.m., two cars collided at the intersection of Route 21 and Bridge Street causing one of the vehicles to lose control and strike a pole at that location.
Emergency responders arrived to find several people trapped and injured occupants inside a red vehicle involved in the collision.
About three victims were transported to University Hospital, where doctors ultimately pronounced a woman dead.
According to preliminary reports, friends and family identified the woman as Ms. Sophia ’Alexis’ Galarza, 27, of Newark and was the mother of a young son.
A witness told RLS Media that the collision occurred when one of the vehicles traveling northbound on NJ-21 attempted to turn left onto Bridge Street.
The witness said the vehicle struck a car traveling southbound towards downtown Newark. Authorities have not released the official cause of the crash at this time.
