According to city officials, the violent collision happed around 1 a.m. at the intersection of 5th and Fulton streets. Police say the male driver of a pickup truck crashed into a vehicle driven by Ms. Zakeirah Fullman, 29, of Elizabeth. One other person is severely injured.
The impact of the collision caused Fullman to eject from her car and onto the street.
She was pronounced dead from severe injuries a short time later.
Although a spokesperson for Elizabeth said a preliminary investigation of the incident appeared to be an accident, residents -who did not want to be identified- told RLS Media that there was a pursuit taking place, but it did not involve police officers.
One resident went as far as telling reporters that a red pickup truck was observed speeding near the intersection shortly before the crash. A badly damaged black pickup truck was only observed at the crash scene.
Elizabeth officials have not confirmed residents' assertion of the pursuit as of Sunday morning.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office has not reported involvement in the collision at this time.
