UPDATE: Three Newark Teens Arrested After Threatening School Shootings on Social Media

Police in Newark have arrested three 13-year-olds who allegedly posted a threatening image on social media, warning of planned shootings at three high schools.

The alarming post circulated online caused hundreds of parents to keep their children home on Thursday out of fear.AdNewark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé commended detectives for their swift action in identifying and apprehending the suspects, two boys and one girl, who now face serious charges, including terroristic threats, cyber harassment, and creating a false public alarm.

“Although these suspects are very young, this is a stark reminder of the consequences of making violent threats, even online,” Fragé stated.

The investigation began when police intercepted the social media post and immediately launched efforts to trace its origin. Within hours, detectives identified and took the three juveniles into custody.

Authorities are actively searching for a fourth suspect believed to be connected to the incident.

The suspects, who have not been named due to their age, each face charges of 3rd-degree terroristic threats, 4th-degree cyber harassment, and 3rd-degree creating a false public alarm, among others.

They are expected to appear in juvenile court, where they will face the legal repercussions of their actions.

This incident has sparked concerns and discussions among parents, educators, and law enforcement officials about the growing issue of online threats and the influence of social media on youth behavior.

Fragé emphasized the importance of vigilance and the seriousness with which such threats are treated, regardless of the suspects' ages.

“Incidents like this are a wake-up call for parents and community members to have open discussions with young people about the potential consequences of their actions online,” he added.AdAuthorities continue to work closely with school officials to ensure the safety and security of all students in the district.

As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with additional information about the case or the whereabouts of the fourth suspect to come forward.
