UPDATE: Suspects Fired Gun After Off-Duty NPD Officer Identified Himself

Newark --- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred in Newark's South Ward overnight.

According to authorities, a preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 12:33 am, two males confronted an off-duty Newark police officer in the 100 block of Wainwright Street and attempted to rob the officer.

Authorities said after the officer identified himself, investigators said one of the suspects fired a weapon.

The off-duty officer returned fire, striking at least one of the suspects police said.

The injured male reportedly ran a short distance before the officer caught him a short distance away.

EMS transported the suspect to University Hospital, where doctors are treating him investigators said.

The second suspect fled and remains at large. The police officer did not suffer any physical injuries.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

UPDATE 11:42am: Police charged **Justin McGriff, 19, of Orange** with robbery, conspiracy and unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose in connection with the police involved shooting in Newark this morning.
