Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Thomas Bryan of the Edison Police Department said today that authorities are searching for the suspect involved in the fatal shooting of a man at the Speedway Gas Station in Edison.
Police describe the suspect - who remains at large - as a male of slight build, wore light colored pants, possibly jeans, a maroon colored hooded sweatshirt, mask and gloves.
Edison Township Police responded to the Speedway Gas Station, located at 789 Amboy Avenue, on Dec. 20th at approximately 4:02 a.m. where they found the victim, later identified as 38-year-old John Bertram, of Fords. Police say the victim who subsequently pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that the suspect entered into the gas station and held up the clerk with a handgun. The victim handed the cash register drawer containing currency to the suspect; after which the suspect fired one shot, apparently killing the victim. Results are pending from the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The investigation is active and continuing.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against the defendant are merely accusations and all are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
