UPDATE: Speeding Vehicles Lead Police to Arrest of Paterson Armed Robbery Suspects

Special Investigations Division Detectives assigned to the Street Crime Unit were in the area of 12 Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard today when they observed two vehicles, a Jeep, and a Honda, driving erratically and at a high rate of speed south on Rosa Parks Boulevard.

According to authorities, once the driver of the Honda, saw detectives, he exited his vehicle and told them that the occupants of the Jeep had just robbed him at gunpoint.

Detectives immediately followed got Jeep down Rosa Parks Boulevard onto 12 Avenue, where they activated their emergency light to conduct a motor vehicle stop.

The driver of the Jeep pulled to the side of the road on 12 Avenue, and the three occupants fled on foot.

Detectives pursued and ultimately apprehended two of the suspects behind an apartment complex on Godwin Avenue.

Police charged the two suspects, later identified as Jose Vasquez, 23 and Louis Nunez, 22, with numerous weapons offenses, as well as armed robbery.

The third suspect, who fled on Rosa Parks Boulevard was briefly tracked by K9 officers but was not located.

During the ensuing investigation, two loaded firearms - a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and an AR-15 assault rifle - were recovered from the suspect vehicle. Police added that both firearms had been previously reported stolen from North Carolina and Nebraska, and will be submitted to the ballistics laboratory for further examination.

The incident remains under investigation.
