Authorities in South Carolina said they took a man into custody and charged him with murdering a University of South Carolina student from New Jersey, who was found dead about a day after she was reported missing.
According to police, they believe Samantha Josephson, 21, was waiting for an Uber or LYFT ride around 2 a.m. Friday in the 5 points section of Columbia, South Carolina.
Police believe that Josephson entered a black Chevy Impala outside of a bar and the driver was 24-year-old, Nathaniel David Rowland.
Authorities have not confirmed if Rowland was an official rideshare driver and believe Josephson mistakenly entered the car.
According to police, at around 3 a.m. Saturday, when officers stopped Rowland's vehicle, he jumped out and ran but was captured by police officers and a K-9 Unit.
Police say they found the victim's blood, her cell phone, bleach, and germicidal wipes during a search of the vehicle.
Police also said the car's child safety locks were engaged, which would prevent someone inside from escaping the back of the vehicle.
The investigation into the incident is in its early stages according to police. It is believed that Rowland acted alone police said.
