Update: Retired Elizabeth Fire Chief Killed in Line of Duty

The retired Elizabeth Fire Chief who was serving as an Union County Mutual Aid Coordinator, died after suffering a medical emergency while operating at a multiple alarm fire in Clark last week, according to officials.

The Elizabeth Firefighters FMBA Local 9 this morning issued the following state, " It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Chief of Department Louis Kelly (Ret.). Chief Kelly was stricken in the line of duty serving as an Union County Mutual Aid Coordinator (MAC-7) while operating at a multiple alarm fire in Clark, on Dec. 8th, where he fell ill."

The raging two-alarm fire that ignited inside a two and a half story house located in the single digit block of Crescent Parkway just before 2 p.m. sent over a dozen firefighters to the scene.

Although there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire, Union County Mutual Aid firefighter Louis Kelly was transported to Rahway hospital after suffering a heart attack while on scene.

Funeral arrangements will be posted as they become available.
