Rescue crews pulled the body of an 18-year-old New Milford High School student from Hardcastle Pond on Friday night, Capt. Kevin Van Saders stated.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the location around 7:13 p.m. after an eyewitness reported that someone went swimming in the pond and did not resurface, Van Saders said.
The boy’s body was recovered after an extensive search around 10 p.m.
Sources familiar with the boy said he was new to the school district after recently moving into town.
“There are no words that can describe the pain that this family is going through right now," New Milford Mayor Michael Putrino said. "Our hearts are broken.”
Police did not immediately identify the victim and said the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities have not reported foul play at this time.
