The American Red Cross assisted more than a dozen residents who were displaced by a severe fire that engulfed their home in Newark's North Ward on Monday evening. The incident, which destroyed a residential building and affected neighboring properties and businesses, occurred at 574-576 Broadway around 6:55 p.m.
According to preliminary information, firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls about the fire.
Upon arrival, crews were met with intense flames shooting through the roof of the three-story wood-framed building, quickly spreading to adjacent structures.
The fire response escalated rapidly, with officials calling for second and third alarms as the flames intensified.
Despite the challenging conditions, Newark firefighters deployed several hose lines in an effort to control the blaze.
By 8 p.m., they were forced to retreat from the roof as the building was declared a total loss.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but was ultimately brought under control late in the evening.
The Red Cross is ensuring that 14 affected residents (three families) receive shelter, food, clothing, and other immediate necessities.
