UPDATE: Police Arrest Suspect Who Ran Over 9-Year-Old Newark Girl

Newark authorities report the arrest of Sawab O. Williams, 51, of Newark, who was being sought for an assault by auto and endangering an injured victim in striking a pedestrian on Tuesday, April 1.

According to Newark officials, at approximately 7:36 a.m., police responded to the intersection of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Spruce Street on a call of a 9-year-old girl struck by a vehicle at that location.

The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. stated. She is reportedly in stable but critical condition.

Newark officials say the driver did not remain at the scene.

Detectives investigating this incident identified Sawab O. Williams as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest, Newark Police said.

Williams faces charges of assault by auto and endangering an injured victim, according to Newark officials.

These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
