UPDATE: Police Arrest Newark Man, Bloomfield Woman After Crashing in Stolen Car

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of Marcus Mendez, 39, of Newark, and Lauren Fletcher , 32, of Bloomfield, after crashing in a stolen Toyota yesterday.

According to authorities, at approximately 12:28 p.m., police observed the stolen vehicle traveling the wrong way on Pennington Street.

Authorities said when the officer attempted a motor vehicle stop, the driver, Mendez, fled striking two parked vehicles near the intersection of Mulberry and Camp Street and rendered the Toyota disabled.

Both Mendez and Fletcher were arrested without further incident.

Mendez is charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Eluding, Criminal Mischief and Possession of Hypodermic Syringes.

Fletcher is charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Hindering Apprehension and Possession of Hypodermic Syringes.

The Toyota was reported stolen in Newark on February 1, 2017.

These charges are merely accusations.

These suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
