Police in Newark announced the arrest of Mr. Geraldo Concepcion, 27, of Newark, one of several suspects sought in connection with an assault of a Newark police officer.
According to police, on May 8, at approximately 11:05 p.m., police responded to Bloomfield and Mount Prospect avenues on a call of a pedestrian struck and a person with a gun.
Upon officer's arrival, they found that an off-duty city police officer was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
The officer exited his vehicle after observing someone on the ground when he was approached by a group of males who assaulted him and took his cell phone, although he had repeatedly announced that he was a police officer.
Police say the other driver ran for safety and the officer was transported to University Hospital for treatment.
Major Crimes Detectives investigating the case developed information identifying Concepcion as one of the suspects the placed him under arrest.
Police charged Concepcion with aggravated assault and conspiracy while several other suspects remain at-large.
While police are actively searching for other suspects, they seek the public’s assistance in quickly locating and removing them from Newark streets.
