Newark Police officials are reporting the arrest of Mr. Jimmy Jones, 51, of Newark, in connection with a hit-and-run incident that occurred on Friday, October 14.
Police say just before 6 p.m., police responded to Bergen Street and Springfield Avenue on a call of a pedestrian struck.
According to police, a 15-year-old girl was crossing the intersection when a silver 2001 BMW X5 struck her.
The driver did not remain at the scene but fled, heading westbound on Springfield Avenue. The teenager was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.
Detectives investigating this incident observed the vehicle on the city’s surveillance camera in the area of Hayes Street and 15th Avenue. They recorded the suspect vehicle’s NJ registration number of V16PNF, which led them to the registered owner, a friend of Jones.
Office glad said on the day of the incident, and after Police contacted the vehicle’s owner, Jones turned himself into Police.
The vehicle was also found abandoned by NJ State Police on the NJ Turnpike on the same day of the incident.
Jones faces charges of aggravated assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident, and endangering an injured person.
These charges are merely accusations.
This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
