Newark --- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision.
Authorities said at approximately 3:25 a.m., **Christina E. Cassidy, 25, of Jersey City** was hit by a Honda Civic while crossing in the vicinity of Raymond Blvd. and McCarter Highway.
Police said that the driver of the vehicle did not stop.
The victim was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:43 am today.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified and arrested.
Authorities identified the man as **Mauricio Silvera, 23, of Elizabeth**.
Silvera has been charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle incident involving a death.
He was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility where he is being held on $150,000 bail.
Friends of Chassidy said that she was orginally from Virginia but moved to the area and was studying at Rutgers Law School. She also worked at the Hudson County Courts her friends said.
These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law or enter a guilty plea.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
