Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred early Sunday morning on Springfield Avenue, Newark, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II.
The victim, identified as Mr. Corey J. Claybrook, 53, of Newark, was struck by a motor vehicle at around 1:30 a.m.Officers from the Newark Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian struck in the 600 block of Springfield Avenue.
Upon arrival, they found Claybrook near 666 Springfield Avenue.
He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:27 a.m.
The driver involved in the incident fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by Newark police.
The suspect, Mr. Ahmed Bouda, 29, of Newark, has been charged with Death by Auto, Leaving the Scene of a Crash, and Failure to Render Aid to an Injured Victim.
Bouda is currently being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility, awaiting a court appearance in the Essex County Central Judicial Processing (CJP) Court.The investigation is being conducted by detectives from the Prosecutor’s Crime Scene Investigations Bureau, which includes personnel from the Newark Fire Department. Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
