Passaic County officials announce that, based upon an investigation conducted by the Paterson Police Department, additional charges have been filed against Tyheem T. Jones, 37, of Hawthorne, who was arrested and originally charged with Attempted Murder, First Degree in relation to an assault that took place on August 27.
Mr. Jones has now been charged with Murder, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Certain Persons not to have Weapons.
According to police, on August 27 at approximately 4:00 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue on report of an assault in progress.
Upon arrival officers observed Tyheem T. Jones pacing back and forth in the middle of the street while breathing heavily and sweating profusely. Moments later, officers discovered Nicolas Reyes, 18, of Paterson, lying on the ground with a large gash on the right side of his head.
Police report the Mr. Reyes was unconscious and was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson for treatment in critical condition.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Mr. Jones assaulted Mr. Reyes, repeatedly punching and kicking him for several minutes as well as pistol whipping him with a handgun during the assault.
Mr. Jones was taken into custody at the scene without incident. The following day, August 28, Mr. Reyes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
