Authorities in Passaic County have announced charges against Daquann Barnes, a 37-year-old man from Paterson, in connection with the fatal shooting of Raheem Porter on August 31, 2024.
According to Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation at approximately 2:47 a.m. in the area of Auburn Street and Ellison Street in Paterson.
Upon arrival, they found Porter, 41, also of Paterson, lying face down with gunshot wounds. Porter was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation identified Barnes as the shooter, and he was arrested without incident on September 2, 2024.
The charges, stemming from an investigation by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, include first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm for an illegal purpose, and certain persons not to possess weapons.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has indicated that a motion for pre-trial detention will be filed, and the Superior Court will schedule a hearing.
