The East Rutherford Police department is investigating a fatal car crash that occurred early this morning.
According to police officials, at approximately 3:56 a.m. Dispatch received reports of a motor vehicle crash on Route 3 westbound just passed the ramp to Route 120.
Police said that upon arrival, officers found a three-car accident with two vehicles engulfed in flames and a driver trapped inside one of the vehicles.
According to officials, East Rutherford police officers, along with officers from Secaucus Police Department, immediately attempted to extricate the driver; however, the intense flames and heat made it impossible.
Police officials said that the victim, a 27-year-old female from Garfield, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. ERFD and EREMS responded and extinguished the fire.
ERPD Detective Bureau is conducting the investigation with the assistance of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department BCI.
NJDOT responded and assisted with traffic control and lane closures.
Officials said that all lanes of Rt 3 westbound near Rt 120 were closed for approximately 5 hours to facilitate the investigation.
