UPDATE: NJ State Police Identifies Man Killed in I-78 Crash in Newark

NJ State Police officials have released the identity of a man who was killed in a crash on I-78 in Newark on Sunday afternoon.

According to a statement released by police. at approximately 4:38 p.m., a Ford work van driven by **Mr. Rene Melendez, Jr., 36** of Manalapan, exited the toll plaza on the NJ Turnpike express lanes at milepost 104.7, Interchange 14, and struck the guardrail end that separates the express and local lanes of I-78.

State Police officials say emergency responders and rescue crews extricated Melendez and medical personnel later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

There were no other injuries.
