Authorities in Pasaaic County announced that Tyheem Jones, 40, of Hawthorne, was sentenced on December 17 by the Hon. Joseph A. Portelli, J.S.C., to fifteen (15) years in New Jersey state prison.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes stated that Jones was found guilty of Aggravated Manslaughter on November 3, 2023, after a jury trial.
Pursuant to the No Early Release Act, Jones must serve eighty-five percent of his sentence before parole eligibility, Passaic County officials said. During the trial, officials say, the State presented evidence that on August 27, 2020, Jones assaulted Nicolas Reyes along with a juvenile and other unidentified suspects in the area of Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue following a shooting incident that had occurred on Godwin Avenue minutes earlier.
Passaic County authorities said the assault was captured on surveillance video, which depicted the entirety of the incident, which lasted approximately eleven minutes.
Reyes was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the assault, officials stated.
