Authorities in Bergen County announced the arrest of 53-year-old Raymond M. Carey of Hasbrouck Heights on charges stemming from an attempted murder involving a crossbow in Saddle Brook.
The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck and the Saddle Brook Police Department under the direction of Chief John Zotollo, BCPO officials stated.
According to Bergen County officials, as previously reported, on Monday, February 17, at approximately 5:55 p.m., the Saddle Brook Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a woman seriously injured at her place of employment, a business on Route 46 East in Saddle Brook.
Responding officers discovered that an adult female had been shot in the face with an arrow from a crossbow, and the suspect fled the scene before their arrival, Bergen County authorities say. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries and survived the attack.
Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit were notified, responded to the scene, and initiated a joint investigation with the Saddle Brook Police Department, BCPO officials stated.
According to Bergen County officials, the investigation revealed that the suspect, an adult male recognized as a previous customer, entered the business located at 104-106 Route 46 East in Saddle Brook and shot the female employee with a crossbow.
After being shot, the female employee was able to disarm the crossbow from the suspect, BCPO officials say. The victim ran from the store to seek help at a neighboring business, while the suspect fled the scene of the crime in a vehicle that was parked outside the business.
During the investigation, detectives identified the vehicle involved and the suspect as Raymond M. Carey, initiating a manhunt to locate him, according to Bergen County authorities.
Accordingly, detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Saddle Brook Police Department engaged with law enforcement agencies throughout the area, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Manchester Township Police Department, among others.
According to BCPO officials, on Tuesday, February 18, at approximately 12:55 p.m., less than twenty-four hours since the assault, Raymond M. Carey was located and arrested in Pine Beach, N.J., with the assistance of the FBI, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bergen County Regional S.W.A.T. Team, the Saddle Brook Police Department, and the Manchester Township Police Department.
Based on the results of the investigation, Carey was charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree obstructing the administration of law, Bergen County authorities said.
Following his apprehension, Carey was transported by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Saddle Brook Police Department back to Bergen County.
Carey was placed into the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
