Police in Newark announced the arrest of Mr. Divine Galette, 18, Newark for committing several armed robberies overnight.
Police say they arrested Galette with two loaded handguns, a .380 and a .9 millimeter, in his possession.
According to a statement released by police, on Saturday evening, two separate victims reported being robbed at gunpoint by males in a white Mercedes Benz.
Police say, Detectives Marc Castro and Steven Resendes, who are assigned to the Special Enforcement Division, were in the area of Lyons Avenue and Hobson Street when they observed a white Mercedes Benz illegally parked with two occupants.
As the detectives approached the car which fit the description of the suspected vehicle, two males exited.
Police say the driver was detained but the passenger managed to escape. Police said they found the weapons in the front passenger seat of the car.
Through their investigation, detectives were able to gather sufficient evidence identifying Galette as one of the suspects who had committed the armed robberies at Highland and Park avenues and Roseville and 2nd avenues according to police.
Police arrested then charged Galette with two counts each of robbery, receiving stolen property (one of the guns and the Mercedes Benz), possession of a handgun and the unlawful possession of a handgun. Authorities say they also charged him with conspiracy and resisting arrest.
“Were it not for the actions of these detectives, this dangerous criminal may not have been captured and could have continued wreaking havoc in our city. I commend them for their quick thinking and for a job well done,” said Director Ambrose.
It is not immediately clear of Galette is responsible for at least two armed robberies in East Orange on Saturday evening.
"This is an on-going investigation as police continue their search for the second suspect", Director Ambrose said.
The charges are merely accusations and the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
