The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation into a shooting that left two males dead Wednesday night in Newark.
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened in the 900 block of Bergen Street in the city's South Ward where police responded to reports of shots fired just before 9:30 p.m.
Several police units arrived at the scene to find the victims suffering multiple gunshot wounds according to authorities.
EMS rushed the pair to University Hospital where authorities say they succumb to their injuries.
Police closed off a large radius around Bergen Street and Nye Avenue that stretched to Renner Avenue where they collected shell casings and other evidence to assist in finding the motive behind the shooting.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
