Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara assisted police officers in apprehending an armed robbery suspect following a foot pursuit last night.
“I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Newark police officer since 2001, and even after 20 years, backing up our cops in the street as they keep our residents safe remains one of the most gratifying experiences of my career,” Director O’Hara said.
At approximately 9:55 p.m., Irvington Police pursued a blue Ford Mustang convertible that was wanted for an armed robbery.
Newark Police observed the vehicle and attempted a motor vehicle stop at Badger Avenue and West Peddie Street, but the driver refused police commands to pull over.
The driver continued speeding and driving recklessly and crashed into two vehicles, with the suspects fleeing the vehicle.
Police initiated a foot pursuit and called for backup as the suspects fled in different directions.
Public Safety Director O’Hara observed a suspect fleeing from officers and successfully apprehended him at 88 Montgomery Street in Irvington.
The other two suspects were apprehended by other responding Newark police officers.
“I commend the officers involved in this arrest, and all Newark police officers who bravely serve our community.” Director O’Hara said.
“This is yet another example of how committed our officers are to keeping residents safe. It's simply what they do every day."
One man, Kamare A. Koanda, 18, of Newark, was arrested along with two male juveniles. Each suspect faces charges of resisting arrest and receiving stolen property.
These charges are merely accusations.
Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
