Essex County authorities reported that Mr. Suhrell S. Proctor was arrested and charged in connection to a fatal hit and run that killed a 5-year-old girl and injured her father and sister as they walked across 6th Avenue, Newark, in the crosswalk.
According to a statement released by Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Spokesman Robert Florida, Proctor, 23, of Newark, was also charged with the theft of two high-end vehicles and trafficking in stolen vehicles.
Spokesman Florida said on January 31, 2023, police responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the intersection of 6th Avenue and North 9th Street.
The 5-year-old girl was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 p.m., and her father and 2-year-old sister, all from Newark, were treated at University Hospital.
Proctor faces charges of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Resulting in Death; Leaving the Scene of a Crash Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; three counts of Endangering an Injured Victim; three theft-related charges; two counts of Burglary; and one count of Fencing.
