Update: Newark Man Accused of Stealing, Crashing Rental in Union

A 26-year-old Newark man, accused of stealing a rental out of Union that he ultimately crashed into several vehicles and utility poles, was taken into custody, according to police.

According to police, sometime around 7 p.m., a man was dropping off a 2015 Dodge Challenger rental at the Hertz on Route 22. As the renter placed his belongings from the rental to his own car, the suspect - David Finney, 26 -jumped into the rental and fled on Route 22 West.

The victim immediately got into his vehicle and followed Finney, until he made a U-turn onto Route 22 East, exiting onto Morris Avenue.

Finney lost control of the car, striking several vehicles, utility poles and power lines. Upon arrival, passerby assisted the man out of the overturned vehicle.

Police arrested Finney and transported him to Trinitas Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Finney was charged with motor vehicle theft and drug possession, and he was issued motor vehicle summonses.

According to police, Finney also had outstanding arrest warrants from Newark and is listed as a fugitive out of the state of Georgia.
