Fire officials in Newar are reporting that 85 members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a three-alarm fire that ignited at 189 Johnson Avenue today.
According to authorities, at approximately 9:14 a.m., firefighters responded to the fire at the vacant 3-story residential building.
Officials say heavy fire spread to two nearby, similar residential buildings, at 185 and 187 Johnson, and was then upgraded to a 3-alarm fire.
According to fire officials, three firefighters suffered injuries, with two transported to University Hospital—one for treatment of an injury to the hand and the other for treatment of an injury to his foot.
Officials say the third firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor laceration then returned to duty. .
Three families, including nine adults and seven children, were relocated due to the fire officials said.
Firefighters placed the fire under control at 10:18 a.m.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Fire Division’s Arson Unit.
