A police-involved shooting on Monday in Montclair led to injuries for both a police officer and a suspect, announced Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II.The incident, which took place around 1:09 p.m. on the 100 block of Forest Street, began when Montclair Police responded to reports of an armed individual at a local residence.
As officers approached the house, they were immediately met with gunfire, resulting in Montclair Police Officer Michael J. Medrano, 33, being struck in the shoulder.
In response, another officer returned fire, hitting the suspect, identified as Maryann Swain, 39, also from Montclair.
Both Officer Medrano and Swain were transported to University Hospital in Newark with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officer Medrano has since been released from the hospital, while Swain remains hospitalized.Upon her release, she is set to be detained at the Essex County Correctional Facility pending her court appearance.
Swain faces charges including aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
These charges are currently allegations, and Swain is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
