UPDATE: Man Sentenced to 16 Years in Prison for 2021 Stabbing in Jersey City

Authorities in Hudson County announced that on Thursday, September 19, the Honorable John A. Young sentenced Darius Evans, 49, to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison for the fatal stabbing of Tyrone Haskins in Jersey City on January 1, 2021.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said Evans, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty to one count of Aggravated Manslaughter on May 21, 2024.

Officials said he must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

The State was represented at sentencing by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Gilbert, officials say. 

According to officials, on Friday, January 1, 2021, at approximately 2:45 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of a possible stabbing victim found in the area of 333 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City.

Officials said responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Tyrone Haskins, 39, of Jersey City – with an apparent stab wound to the torso.

He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:20 a.m., authorities say.
