Authorities in Somerset County announced that on Tuesday, June 18, defendant Amitoj Oberoi, 30, of Somerset, entered guilty pleas to two counts of first-degree Vehicular Homicide before the Honorable Jonathan W. Romankow, J.S.C.Officials said the guilty pleas expose defendant Oberoi to a 15-year prison term, 85% of which will be served without eligibility for parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act.
Defendant Oberoi also entered a guilty plea to a motor vehicle offense of Driving While Intoxicated, officials stated.
According to officials, the charges are a result of a motor vehicle crash that occurred on August 27, 2023, at about 6:22 a.m., on Route 27 in Franklin Township.
The crash resulted in the deaths of victims Carlos Perez-Gaytan, age 24, Somerset, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, age 20, North Brunswick, who were passengers in the vehicle driven by defendant Oberoi, authorities say. Officials say the sentencing is scheduled for August 14, 2024, before Judge Romankow.
