Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and Newark Police are looking for an unidentified gunman who shot and killed a man near a daycare center in Newark Monday afternoon.
It happened around 3:45 p.m. in the vicinity of 311 South 6th Street.
Police responded to reports of shots fired, and when officers arrived, they found a man suffering a bullet wound in his head at that location.
According to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, doctors pronounced the victim died a short time later.
The shooting forced school and daycare center officials to immediately rush students back into the building and conduct a lockdown procedure until authorities cleared the neighborhood.
The gunman fled the scene and remained at large.
No other injuries were reported.
