Essex County authorities are investigating a deadly shooting at a housing complex in Newark on Thursday evening.

At approximately 5:20 p.m., police responded to several 911 calls reporting shots fired and a person lying on the ground on the Avon Avenue side of the Pilgrim Village Housing complex.

Police said officers arrived on the scene and found a severely injured man suffering a gunshot wound to his head.

The victim, Mr. Rasheed Lee, 35, of Newark, was rushed to University Hospital suffering life-threatening injuries but died from his injuries Friday.

Residents in the complex told RLS Media they heard two males arguing then gunfire erupted.

Police found a weapon at the scene but did not confirm who the gun belonged to.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will handle the active and ongoing investigation.
