UPDATE: Man Found Shot Dead in Newark’s South Ward

Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 34-year-old man early Saturday morning on a street corner in Newark’s West Ward.

Police reported that officers responded to the area of South 17th Street and Madison Avenue around 5:40 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Bashir L. Peebles suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. 

Authorities noted that Peebles did not have a known permanent address at the time of his death.

Law enforcement officials have not announced any arrests or suspects in connection to the shooting. 

The motive remains unclear, and investigators continue to piece together what led to the fatal encounter.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is leading the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
