The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is leading an investigation into a fatal shooting that took the life of a Newark resident near West Side Park on Saturday evening.
According to authorities, residents in the 600 block of South 13th Street alerted police around 7:00 p.m. after hearing multiple gunshots near their homes across from the park.
Upon arrival, Newark police officers found the lifeless body of 44-year-old Rahman Loyal, a Newark resident, who had been struck by multiple gunshots.
Investigators believe the gunman fired several rounds before fleeing the scene.
The area was taped off as detectives worked to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and the suspect is currently at large.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has urged anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
