Essex County authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred overnight in the city’s Lower West Ward, with detectives looking into whether a dispute over a woman led to the deadly altercation.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, police were dispatched to the vicinity of Fairmont Avenue and West Market Street around 9:10 p.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of a violent encounter taking place.
When officers arrived, they found Donell Watson, 37, of Newark suffering from multiple stab wounds and bleeding heavily near the Georgia King Village housing complex.

Watson was rushed to nearby University Hospital, where medical professionals attempted to save his life. However, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Authorities have not announced any arrests but believe the suspect may have been someone known to Watson.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
