A woman who stabbed a man she met online during their first in-person date was arrested early this morning, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports.
Police say Zaniya P. Stevens, 23, of Newark is accused of stabbing her date three times during an altercation while visiting his apartment, leaving him with non-life threatening injuries.
Police were called to the North Ward residence at about 2 a.m., and were flagged down by Stevens, who said she stabbed the man in self-defense.
Police say, Stevens claimed she was strangled but police found no evidence of any neck abrasions.
The victim told police he and Stevens had met on social media and had several exchanges before inviting her to his apartment.
Stevens was arrested without incident.
Police say she faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
These charges are merely accusations.
This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
