A SWAT standoff that developed on a street in High Bridge Tuesday afternoon ended with police taking an armed man into custody.
According to a statement released by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, SWAT team members were called to a house located in the single digit block of Overlook Drive at approximately 1:55 p.m. after they received reports of a man who barricaded himself in his home and was armed with weapons.
Police arrived at the scene and contacted SWAT after the male refused to come out of the residence according to the statement.
According to reports, at some point of the standoff, the suspect allegedly pointed a weapon through the window at police in an attempt to intimidate SWAT team members. Reports said this is when SWAT team members initiated several flash grenades into the residence then stormed the house and took the man into custody.
It is not immediately clear if the suspect fired his weapon at police.
Polic took the suspect into custody without incident at approximately 6:30 p.m., Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III said.
“I would like to commend Chief Bret Bartman and the High Bridge Police Department as well as the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office SWAT team and negotiators," Kearns said. "The officers and the team that responded today train vigorously for situations like this. Their level of competency and commitment to their profession directly led to bringing the individual into custody without further incident or injury. Law enforcement exercised great restraint and professionalism in bringing this matter to a safe resolution.”
“I commend all involved law enforcement, medical and fire personnel in bringing this situation to a resolution," Bartman said. "Our citizens should remain confident in our efforts to maintain a safe community.”
