Authorities in Essex County are on the search for a suspect who shot a Newark resident dead in Newark’s Central Ward Saturday evening.
The broad daylight attack happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Matin Luther King Boulevard near Montgomery Street.
Police say a moving gun battle on the boulevard sent residents scrambling for cover after shooters blasted round in the direction of Mr. Devine Shells, 20, of Newark.
When officers arrived at the scene, they observed shell casings on the ground and Mr. Shells lying on the ground unconscious and unresponsive after suffering gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said several onlookers began to use their smartphones to record what was left of the violent episode.
Police said Shells was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation and no arrests have been reported.
