UPDATE: Gunfire Kills Man in Newark's South Ward

An early Thursday afternoon shooting that erupted in Newark's South Ward now has authorities from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office investigating a fatality.

Reports of multiple rounds of gunfire that rang out in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and Huntington Terrace had police swarming to the scene at around 2:30 p.m. where first responding officers located two people shot at that location.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office said the victims were a male and a female; both rushed to University Hospital suffering gunshot wounds.

The man, shot multiple times, was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the female victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.

There were no arrests made.
