Newark Firefighters battled a fast-moving fire that tore through a multi-family home in the city’s West Ward on Tuesday morning. The blaze, which broke out at 356 South 6th Street just before 9:25 a.m., quickly engulfed the three-story structure, sending flames shooting through the roof and threatening neighboring homes.
Crews arriving at the scene were met with intense flames, prompting officials to strike a second alarm.
Firefighters deployed multiple hoses to combat the fire, which raced through the walls and destroyed all floors of the home.
Efforts to contain the fire were complicated after it burned through the interior structure, eliminating the stairs to the upper floors.
Despite the challenges, a search of the home revealed no victims.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The American Red Cross responded to the scene, assisting 14 people from six displaced families.
They are providing temporary lodging, food, clothing, and other emergency support to those affected.
