The Bridge Township Police Department is currently investigating a devastating structure fire accompanied by a loud explosion on West Greystone Road, reported at approximately 11:21 a.m. The incident occurred across from Jonas Salk.
Middle School, prompting an immediate "Shelter in Place" directive for the school due to the proximity and severity of the blaze.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found a commercial building engulfed in flames, with reports of possible entrapment inside.
To support the overwhelmed local teams, additional police, EMS, and fire units from Spotswood, East Brunswick, Marlboro, and Monroe were called in.
The intensive response efforts also involved two medical helicopters to transport critically injured victims.
Tragically, the incident resulted in one fatality, a 73-year-old female.
Other victims include a 57-year-old female with severe burns to her face and hands and a 29-year-old male with burns to his arms and hands, both airlifted to Barnabas Hospital.
A 65-year-old female with minor burns and a 62-year-old male suffering from smoke inhalation was transported by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.
Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time, but the investigation remains active to determine the cause of the explosion and fire.
The community is in shock as local officials and emergency services continue to manage the aftermath and investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
