UPDATE: Emotionally Challenged Man Allegedly Pointed Fake Gun at Bayonne Police Before They Fired at Him

Police say on Wednesday, September, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Bayonne Police Officers were dispatched to 129 Avenue F in Bayonne on a report of an Emotionally Disturbed Person.

According to police upon arrival, two officers encountered a male who was verbally abusive and who displayed menacing behavior toward the officers.

The male, later identified as Ryan Schultheis, 25, of Bayonne, then displayed what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at the officers.

One of the officers then discharged his service weapon.

It was later determined that the weapon displayed by Schultheis was an imitation firearm.

Schultheis was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center

for evaluation.

The two officers who initially responded to the scene were also transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Schultheis has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer in violation of N.J.S. 2C:12-1b, a third-degree crime, and one count of Possession of an Imitation Firearm in violation of N.J.S. 2C:39-4, a fourth-degree crime.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor has taken over the investigation from the Bayonne Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.
