Authorities in Union County are currently investigating a high-speed pursuit that led to a serious crash in Newark's Central Ward early Wednesday morning.
According to Elizabeth City Spokeswoman Ruby Contreras, the pursuit began shortly before 5:45 a.m. and stemmed from a home invasion robbery in Edison, New Jersey.
Elizabeth Police officers patrolling the area spotted the vehicle believed to be involved in the robbery near a WAWA on Route 1&9 Northbound.
Spokeswoman Contreras said they followed the vehicle into Newark as it led cops through several neighborhoods.
Tragically, the pursuit ended in a violent crash when the driver lost control of the vehicle in the area of Quitman and Spruce Streets.
The out-of-control vehicle struck two other vehicles after rolling over.
One of the victims inside the car sustained severe injuries and was rushed to University Hospital for treatment.
The injured victim remains under medical care, while no officers were harmed during the incident.
Despite initial concerns from residents, Spokeswoman Contreras confirmed that there were no reports of injuries to pedestrians or others beyond the occupants of the vehicles involved in the crash.
The investigation into the pursuit and crash is ongoing.
