The Elizabeth man who held a 6-year-old boy hostage during an hours-long standoff with police at an Elizabeth apartment complex over the weekend has been charged in connection with the incident, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park and Elizabeth Police Department Deputy Chief John Brennan jointly announced Monday.
LeRoy Boyd, 38, is charged with second-degree kidnapping and third-degree possession of cocaine.
He is being held at Union County Jail pending a first appearance in the case.
Elizabeth Police Department units responding to a report of a domestic dispute traveled to the Mravlag Manor apartment complex shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sunday and found Boyd and the child behind closed doors in a third-story unit, according to the investigation.
Following more than five hours of talks, Boyd surrendered and the boy was released unharmed.
Convictions on second-degree criminal charges are commonly punishable by 5 to 10 years in state prison.
