A 52-year-old Elizabeth man has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier this week, according to a statement released by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. Mr. Jose DJ Melo faces charges including first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
The incident took place around 9:12 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2024, when Elizabeth Police responded to a residence on Florida Street following reports of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Naket Jadix Trinidad Maldonado, also of Elizabeth, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Social media video showed Melo propose to Maldonado a couple days before the fatal encounter.

Prosecutors emphasized that the charges against Melo are accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
