A 52-year-old Elizabeth man has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier this week, according to a statement released by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
Mr. Jose DJ Melo faces charges including first-degree murder, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
The incident took place around 9:12 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2024, when Elizabeth Police responded to a residence on Florida Street following reports of a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers discovered 31-year-old Naket Jadix Trinidad Maldonado, also of Elizabeth, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Social media video showed Melo propose to Maldonado a couple days before the fatal encounter.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.

Prosecutors emphasized that the charges against Melo are accusations at this stage, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
