Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating a police involved shooting that resulted in the death of two men.
Authorities said the preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:30 p.m. yesterday an off-duty Jersey City police officer shot and killed two men who allegedly were attempting to rob him.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred in the 100 block of South 6th Street in Newark.
Authorities identified the men as Mr. Dante Holden, 19, of East Orange and Mr. Tymyr Wilson, 21, of East Orange (Photo in Suit)
Information gathered so far indicates the police officer was dropping off an acquaintance and two children when they were confronted by the alleged robbers.
Police said both suspects were armed.
Police said one of the men apparently attempted to fire at the officer but the weapon jammed.
The officer’s name is not being released at this time.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Consistent with Attorney General guidelines the facts and circumstances of the shooting will be presented to an Essex County grand jury.
