UPDATE: Off-Duty Elizabeth Cop Charged with Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide in Fatal Motorcycle Crash

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey announced today that a driver has been criminally charged in the fatal collision with a motorcycle driven by an Elizabeth man on October 31, 2017.

 

According to authorities, Romulo Meneses-Alvarez, 30, of Elizabeth, was charged on December 12, 2017 with the third degree crime of strict liability vehicular homicide, for causing a death by driving while intoxicated or under the influence.

 

The victim, Jairo Lozano, 29, of Elizabeth, was struck and killed by a car driven by off-duty Elizabeth Police Officer Romulo Meneses-Alvarez. Lozano was taken to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

 

Three other motor vehicle summons were previously issued for Alvarez for driving while intoxicated, careless driving, and failing to yield the right of way.

 

During the investigation it was determined that on October 31, 2017 at approximately 11:20 p. m., Alvarez was driving his personal car, a 2007 Jeep Wrangler heading south on Elmora Avenue and collided with the victim’s 2005 GSX Suzuki motorcycle at the intersection of Elmora Avenue and Vine Street in Elizabeth.

 

The investigation is active and is continuing.
