UPDATE: Charges Upgraded for Alleged Hit-and-Run Driver in Galloway Fatal Crash

MAYS LANDING- Officials say based on further investigation, charges have been upgraded to aggravated manslaughter against a 38 year-old Absecon man in connection to a fatal accident where a woman was killed in Galloway on Monday, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

Officials say Keneet Camacho is charged with the following:

One count of Aggravated Manslaughter

One count of 4th degree Assault by Auto (for the surviving driver involved in the head-on collision)

One Count Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

Being Involved in a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash while having a Suspended License.

Camacho is in custody at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, awaiting a detention hearing. Assistant Prosecutor Katheleen Robinson represents the state in this matter.

According to officials, on Monday morning at approximately 7:58 am, the Galloway Township Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Wrangleboro Road, just north of Walden Way.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2016 Hyundai Elantra was traveling south on Wrangleboro Road when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Toyota Highlander.

The impact projected the Hyundai vehicle into the oncoming lane where it was struck head-on by a 2014 Honda CRV traveling north.

The driver of the Hyundai vehicle, Janel Bembry, 48, of Galloway Township, was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The driver of the Honda CRV, Gail Schifris, 61, was transported to Atlanticare Medical Center City Division for treatment of serious bodily injuries.

This crash is currently under investigation by the Galloway Township Police Department and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Investigations Unit.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander, Camacho, fled the scene of the crash and was located by Galloway Township Police officers in the area of Great Creek and Pitney Road.
