Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports the arrest of Rajahn Smith, 22, of Newark, who was wanted for escape by Human Services Police in Trenton and is a suspect in several shootings and robberies in Newark.
According to Director Ambrose, police also arrested Kenyon Esannason, 19, of Newark who was with Smith and is wanted on a $200,000.00 warrant for Receiving Stolen Property.
Authorities said, sometime yesterday, police received information that Smith was seen driving a stolen blue Mercedes Benz SUV in the area of South Orange Avenue and 9th Street.
Detectives located the vehicle and observed Smith inside Director Ambrose said.
The vehicle evaded police in the area of Bradley Court and was later found abandoned on the northbound side of the Garden State Parkway, near Exit 150.
Smith and Esannason were apprehended and arrested by Bloomfield Police after a foot pursuit.
Esannason was also allegedly found in possession of a handgun according to Director Ambrose.
Smith is charged with Escape and Esannason is charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
These charges are merely accusations.
Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
